Yours to experience:
- Memorable walks over solitary hills, glens and along a stunning sea coast with vistas on a fine day to the Hebridean islands of Tiree, Jura, Iona, Colonsay and Oronsay.
- Wildlife galore: bird types aplenty, including two resident golden eagles, deer and feral goats
- Two white sandy beaches within easy walking distance and several others a short drive away
- Marks of history on the landscape: remains of one of the best preserved ‘clearance townships’ in the Highlands and the ruins of a medieval church and cemetery with links to Iona Abbey
- Small working farm across the track from the house: children can see lambs, calves and friendly sheep dogs up close
- Short drive to Iona ferry with boat trips from there to Staffa (Fingal’s Cave, puffin therapy) and the bird and seal colonies of the remote Treshnish Isles
‘It is difficult for me to think of any other place in the Western Highlands and Islands which combines such magical coastal scenery, the evidence of communities long gone but their old ways of life still marked on the land, together with a wealth of wildlife for the fortunate visitor to enjoy’
Professor Sir Tom Devine, Historian of Scotland, University of Edinburgh
The Road to Shiaba
The two miles scenic route to Shiaba from the main road is partly tarmac and then becomes a well-used traditional farm track in its later stages. Drivers should maintain a slow speed and proceed with care in this section.
The track has its origins in a ’Destitution Road’ which was part of the relief schemes at the time of the Great Highland Famine in the 1840s. It was laid down by men, women and children from the neighbourhood who worked for a small pittance of meal in return for hard daily toil.
You can reflect on that past life as you approach your destination at Scoor.
